It has always been said that one of the most relaxing sounds is the murmur of the waves. In Croatia, the steps known as the majestic organ on the Zadar pier have been in charge, since 2005, of giving musical voice to each wave that arrives at the place, thus becoming one of the most striking tourist attractions.
People who are passionate about music not only listen to it in all places or through any form, but they also want to share it with the world. Listening carefully to the chirping of birds, the sound of the wind through the trees or the pounding of the waves makes you listen to the true music within nature.
Nikola Bašić is an architect and music lover who decided not to live for himself only the murmur of the sea, but through a great and creative design he has been able to translate to the world the notes of each coming and going of the waves of the Adriatic Sea on the banks of Zadar.
A majestic organ
In Croatia, Zadar is a metropolis that for more than 19 years has included the Sea Organ as part of one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in all of Europe. The Morkse Orgulje, translated as the Majestic Organ, leaves visitors astonished not only by its architectural work, but by the way in which anyone who arrives at the place is caught by the music.
The speed and force in the push of the waves are observed when touching the surface of each step, but that is nothing more than the facade of an entire highly engineered system that hides under this wide marble staircase. This is not just a majestic construction, but a unique one. At the architectural level, the inhabitants of Zadar appreciate having broken with the monotony of a sad and simple structure that was supposed to be a work to recover the devastation of the Second World War.
On the other hand, it has given life to this coastal side, turning it into a natural marine organ whose acoustic behavior of permanent concerts invites, more and more tourists from all over Europe and the world.
This giant organ whose interpreter are the waves is a difficult spectacle to ignore and to which we must acknowledge a major work for its creation. The sea water and the wind together with the joint work of engineering and architecture allow the flow of the waves to achieve a true musical spectacle. With each movement, the mechanism is capable of creating different and unrepeatable musical sounds through 35 tubes and a resonance chamber.
The white stone steps house the tuned pipes below them and throughout their seventy meters in length they let out a sweet melody of unique random chords through openings in their sidewalk. It is a system of polyethylene pipes and holes in the upper row of steps that receives the seawater pushed by a considerable column of air. After receiving water and wind, these are channeled to the tubes that have species of whistles capable of generating 7 chords of 5 tones. By paying attention, this continuous sound fills you with its depth and variation of harmonies.
Many of those who have had the opportunity to enjoy this creation in person consider it an acoustic work worth seeing. Each wave plays its own song, since they are not simple tubes amplifying the natural sound of the water hitting the pier. Whether you decide to contemplate the vast sea sitting, standing or walking along the entire structure, you will listen to music that occurs naturally, but that emanates in tune and harmoniously from the heart of this great marine organ.
A musical twilight
The Zadar Sea Organ is true music for your ears and relaxation for your whole being. Go beyond the barriers of music giving you one of the most relaxing views for the human mind: the vast sea. If you get the opportunity to move to where this creative musical form is, you will be able, like many people who have gone, to meditate, read, chat or enjoy the sunset.
Walking along this pier and observing the view while the chords sound will not make you doubt which is the best organ to listen to and recommend it to your friends and family. Although reference is made to certain precedents such as the Wave Organ, there are clear differences between them. This one, for example, located on a pier in San Francisco, consists of 25 tubes created as a sculpture that amplify the sound when the waves impact both inside and outside the pipe. The force of its sounds at high tide is really impressive.
For her part, in Croatia, Mother Nature is given the opportunity to create her own true music. And, according to very pleased visitors, it is one of the places where the sunset is enhanced by the musical notes, appreciated as a true spectacle of nature.
Recognition of the work
Having decided to transform a pier into a jetty that until now went unnoticed in a great work has been recognized worldwide. Not only were the positive comments and flattering description of visitors and tourist pages from the moment it was opened to everyone, but it also proudly won, just one year after its creation, the European Prize for Urban Public Space.
This translates the way how Nikola Bašić together with experts in marine hydraulics, pipes and organs put all their passion to provide an improved and transformed space for the good of all who have the opportunity to go and live this magnificent musical experience by the sea. In this small space, you can indulge yourself with a wonderful view and a melodious sound that will represent an experience difficult to forget.
